Social Media and Body Image Self-pace Workshop

Interested in knowing more about our social media and body image workshop? Look no further! Here's all you need to know.

What is this workshop about?

Social media is known to negatively impact body image satisfaction, but what is less understood is what we can do about it! Often the recommendation is to stop and to take a break from social media to see the positive impact. But for most of us, our lives are intertwined with social media in such a way that this is not a realistic, long term strategy for many.

What is less known is that you can make changes to the way you use social media to reduce the harms it can cause and in some instances even work on body satisfaction in the social media space and in doing so creating a ‘microclimate’ that reinforces positive messages regarding bodies.

This workshop is practical, based on real life practice, lived experience recommendations and academic research and will help you, your loved one, or your clients learn the following:

You will:

  • Learn what the most up to date research says is important in understanding how social media impacts body image and what makes a positive difference

  • Learn a model to understand what factors contribute to your negative body image when using social media

  • Understand the most commonly used platforms and understand the parts most likely to trigger body dissatisfaction

  • Have an understanding of the unique ways algorithms inform what you see on social media and how to make changes to protect your body image

  • Understand the ways our cultural context influences what we see on social media and what we can do about it

  • Know how to improve social media literacy - ie., how to analyse, evaluate, detect misinformation and sift through the content found online

  • Learn to identify and manage content that is triggering for body dissatisfaction

  • Understand what content on social media is least helpful and ways to manage this

  • Understand what content and ways to use social media are most helpful in fostering body satisfaction

  • Get a bonus workbook that helps you foster all of the strategies outlined

  • And more…

What does the workshop involve?

We know what it takes to create change, and one of the most helpful ways to do this is through ‘multiple modality learning’ - i.e. learning the information using different formats. This workshop was structured to support this approach to give everyone the best chance of implementing the strategies explored.

This workshop has multiple facets of learning, including:

  • 16 short videos (approx 3.5 hours in length in total - access for 4 weeks)

  • Workshop slides to reference and prompt your memory

  • Quizzes to consolidate and reinforce learning messages

  • Workshop bonus - includes a comprehensive workbook of activities and strategies to continue your learning journey.  The workbook has a glossary of helpful terms, and encourages the application of the strategies explored in the workshop in real life.

Who is this workshop for?

This training is for anyone wanting to improve their relationship with their bodies, reduce the impact social media use may be having on body image satisfaction and for clinicians who are working to support their clients in this space.

It is for anyone wanting to improve their body image, parents and loved ones, partners, mental health clinicians, teachers, school counsellors and more.

Younger adolescents/tweens are likely to benefit from a caregiver or another helpful adult to support the learning process - some language/terms may be complicated for younger clients.

I'm still not sure - will I regret this workshop?

Social media is a powerhouse in our lives, cultural environment, and one of the key factors reinforcing body dissatisfaction for many people.  Learning this information will help you, your loved ones and/or clients make changes to the way you engage with, share information, and consume information in the social media realm. Completing this workshop is one big step towards improving your relationship with yourself and your body.
